A face like this can't be bad, and it isn't.

It's the face of a true Jack Russell Terror.

I'd have put him in my profile picture, but it's hard enough to get a Jack Russell Terrier to stand still for three seconds, let alone do it in the confines of 78 pixels.

I am here to tell you what it's like to live with one of these very intelligent, stubborn and turbo-charged dogs.

Take Sunday afternoon, for example. The entire Sunday afternoon.

After full-out sprinting with his pals in the park --I believe the other dogs had to be carried home-- Jasper came inside and held a doggie toy circus in the living room.

This went on for another two hours and around 5 p.m., I decided to cut it off.

"JASPER, really it's enough," I told him as I walked into the kitchen.

About two minutes later, THUMP, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump. A bouncy red ball rolls across the floor.

I look up and there's Jasper in the doorway, standing frozen with a front leg bent up in his best hunting pose.

Blink, blink. He stared back at me.  If he could have stood on his hind legs with his paws on his hips, he would have.

"Jaaaassssssperrrrr......"

Finally, he ran up on his chair and sat down.

It wasn't always like this.

No, for the first year of his life, Jasper tried to kill me.  He never sat down.

Luckily, there are many things you can do with a dog that has a three-digit I.Q.  and the activity level of the Energizer Bunny on caffeine.

Obedience classes are a great option, especially if you enjoy being embarrassed in front of large groups of people.
Anyone know the sit and stay command?  By the way, Jasper can now do a 45-second sit and stay off-leash, so I must have done something right.

In  his obedience class, Jasper once did a beautiful sit and stay position while facing me. He waited until I had backed up about 30 feet across the room with my arm held out in the stay signal. Then he stood up, turned around, and sat facing away from me.

Every person in the class roared with laughter.

There's more, but you get the idea.

Am I saying Jack Russells are bad dogs? Never. They're great dogs.  I'm saying they're not the dog for everyone.

Besides, whenever Jasper gets me frazzled, I just think of all the chocolate I'd never be able to eat if I had a dog that wasn't so active.

And I think of all the laughs I'd be missing -- even the ones made at my own expense.
