Animal lovers are well aware of how the failing economy is impacting pets.
Donations and available kennel space are barely keeping pace with the number of pets being surrendered by families who can no longer care for them.
But how can you help if your bank account is declining as fast as the unemployment rate is rising?
The Web sites freekibble.com  and freekibblekat.com  might be the answer.
After answering a daily trivia question, 10 pieces of kibble will be donated to hungry pets at animal shelters.  Even if you answer incorrectly, the food will still be donated.
The program was designed by Mimi Ausland, 12, of  Bend, Ore., who wanted to help feed the dogs and cats at her local animal shelter, according to her Web sites.
The free kibble goes to the Humane Society of Central Oregon, along with 10 other shelters from Oregon to Florida.
The program partners with Castor & Pollux Pet Works to provide the food.
Since April, the program has provided  more than 540,000 meals for dogs and cats, according to the Web site. More than 61 million pieces of dog kibbles and 37 million cat kibbles have been donated.
