As speculation rages on about what kind of puppy President-Elect Barack Obama will bring into the White House, another national doggie role is waiting to be filled.
This one is for the first 'SpokesDog' for Milk-Bone.
Dogs across the nation have been digging for ways get the gig, complete with a $100,000 cash prize, and the chance to travel across the country doing photo shoots and making publicity appearances.
Seeing your mug on the Milk-Bone box (plus all the dog treats you can eat, no doubt), isn't too shabby, either.
In January, the contest kicked off with a cross-country road trip to recruit the next SpokesDog.
To enter, pet parents were asked to submit photos or videos of their prized pooch caught in a Milk-Bone moment.
What defines a Milk-Bone moment? Almost anything.
Some dogs in the pictures balanced Milk-Bones on their noses. What appears to be a Jack Russell Terrier is holding a Milk-Bone in its mouth in display of self-control not usually seen in the breed.
Birthday hats, graduation caps, babies, wedding dresses, and a guitar all became part and parcel to the Milk-Bone moments.
A beagle is reading a book (o.k., he's looking at it), and a bulldog is taking a dip in a pool, wearing his Doggles (dog goggles).
Milk-Bones didn't have to be in the pictures, although product placement was popular.
One owner's dog is sitting in a shopping cart while she holds a Milk-Bone box to the dog's face.
After viewing the photos, you can vote for your favorite here.
The contest is down to 100 finalists and voting ends Tuesday (Nov. 18). The winner is expected to be named in January 2009.
In addition to the grand prize winner, the 99 runner-ups will receive digital cameras to capture more --what else-- Milk-Bone moments.
All of the contestants will be forever entered into the National Hall of Fame for Weird Dog People.
Before anyone gets upset, I'm also a card-holding member.
