Summer is just around the corner, and warmer weather offers opportunity for those folks who have been staying inside during an unseasonably cold winter and spring. Folks suffering from conditions such as ulcerative colitis and crohn’s (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and other digestive autoimmune conditions, can benefit by getting outside for a few minutes every day.

The late spring and summer sunshine will douse the body with essential vitamin D, a crucial nutrient for those with malabsorption problems, fatigue, and mild depression. Spring air also has a way of relieving the day to day stress that can contribute to the severity of existing symptoms, and gentle movement will help to relieve achy joints often associated with digestive illnesses. For Billings, Montana dwellers, the surrounding region offers some beautiful rural areas, perfect for a health-inducing, stress-relieving jaunt outdoors away from the city.

The key is to start any new activity slowly, and to be sure to drink plenty of pure water to stay hydrated while spending time outdoors.

This little town is the gateway to the scenic Beartooth Highway and offers endless trailheads for a light day of hiking. Pack along a bike and ride the Two-Mile road just 2 miles south of town, right off hwy 212, or take an easy stroll through the town’s Beartooth Nature Center during one of their upcoming wildlife activities.

Absarokee
Get out of the city the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month now through August for a short one hour hike with the Greenmont Walkers Club. Meet the locals and find out about upcoming Farmer’s Markets in July and Fishtail Days on June 27th!

Nye
This recreation area backs up to the Custer National Forest and the Stillwater River runs right through the area. Pack a picnic basket with fresh whole foods, grab a fishing pole, and park along one of the fishing access roads. Take a short hike to the river, cast a line, and feel the stress melt away. Don’t fish?  Buffalo Jump offers some easy class I and II river rafting opportunities.

Rapelje
Home of the 24-hour bike race, but this year also features a 13 mile course, perfect for just starting out on a mountain bike. For folks not ready for competition, this in-the-middle-of-nowhere-town, just 50 miles west of Billings, offers a day’s refuge from the day to day stress of downtown Billings. Don some walking shoes and show up with no agenda, other than to explore and jaw with the locals.
