Wow. Where do I start with this one.
Ok, here goes.
Joe sees Vibe Magazine's Best Rapper List and freaks out. He's upset with Vibe Magazine for not being transparent about their placement of MCs on this list. The list was set up NCAA Bracket-style with MCs up against each other in subsequent playoff rounds. He's ranked last (#32) in one of the brackets (there are 4 brackets).
Specifically, Joe directly addresses Method Man(as well as many other MCs) and says that he is leagues ahead of Method Man: LYRICALLY. Joey has a point. Lyrically, .he IS better than 50% of the MCs on that list, if not 75% of the list.
Joey calls into Power 105.1 with Free and Ed Lover. Joe stands firm in his opinion. Ed Lover and Free argue with Joe.
A few minutes later, Method Man calls in. Meth is angry...and here's where it goes wrong...
While Joe is adamant about keeping it in the Rap, specifically Lyrical realms of disagreement; Meth takes it to a personal level. He talks about Joey being on medication; claiming that he's mentally unstable. He talks about Joe's friends getting smacked around. Meth also does what most rappers are known to do whenever "disrespected..." He wants Joey to "take it to the streets."
Sigh..
Either way, I think this is lame...Not because of the question Joey is asking...but because of the place Method Man chose to take it...(and the radio station VJs that hyped him).
My take: Unfortunately, for Joey, rapping is more than lyrics; or else, it would be poetry. It's hard to remove all of the other qualities that make a good rapper and just focus on the lyrics: See My previous article: How to Rate MCs.
