Cat food recall: Premium Edge®
Diamond Pet Foods has issued a recall of several Premium Edge® cat foods.

Diamond Pet Foods has issued a recall on two of the cat food products the company produces and distributes. The recalled products are:

  • Premium Edge® Finicky Adult Cat
  • Premium Edge® Hairball for Cats

The recalled product codes are:

  • RAF0501A22X 18lb.,
  • RAF0501A2X 6 lb.,
  • RAH0501A22X 18 lb.,
  • RAH0501A2X 6lb

Cat food recalled due to thiamine deficiency

According to Diamond Pet Foods, the foods in question were tested and found to be uncontaminated but deficient in thiamine. Apparently, the reason for the thiamine deficiency is still a mystery and the investigation is ongoing. Diamond Pet Foods has "tracked the vitamin premix lot number that was utilized in these particular cat foods and has performed testing on another lot of Premium Edge cat food that used the same vitamin premix, and it was not deficient in thiamine."

Thiamine is an essential element in the cat diet. Absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, thiamine is metabolized in the liver. Thiamine deficiency may be manifested as gastrointestinal, neuromuscular/CNS signs or cardiac effects.

Recalled cat food causes neurological symptoms

Symptoms exhibited by cats eating the recalled Premium Edge® foods are primarily neurological in nature and include:

  • decreased appetite,
  • vomiting,
  • incoordination,
  • dull mentation,
  • abnormal eye movements,
  • dilated pupils,
  • blindness,
  • seizures,
  • ventral flexion,
  • rigid posturing,
  • increased respiratory rate, and
  • low body temperature.

Recall centered in Rochester, New York

To date, the cats suffering from these symptoms due to these recalled cat food products have been centered in and around the Rochester, New York area. However, cat owners feeding these diets are urged to check the product codes listed on the labels. Any cat owner noticing similar symptoms in cats fed these diets should seek veterinary care for their pets immediately.
