With tough economic times, every dime can count. “The phrase used to be every penny can count.” Even quotes have gone up. Old Benjamin Franklin would have to say today – “a percentage saved is a percentage earned.”

If you are a member of AARP, then you probably receive their magazine which is reported to be the world’s largest circulation magazine. Dr.  Ethel Percy Andrus would be both proud and amazed at the crop her seedlings have produced.   Refer to previous article – AARP and Reebok – a couple of articles down to read about this amazing lady who got it all started.

People of all ages and social backgrounds are looking for ways to save or stretch their budget dollars so they can cover their expenses. The July/August edition gives several more suggestions and ways to save.

A previous Atlanta Faith and Family article – AARP and Reebok - introduces those to AARP who may not know about its many benefits offered to those fifty and over.  From its small beginnings – it has grown into a multi-faceted network of putting senior consumer and companies together.

For those who may not quite be at the eligible age to be qualified for AARP membership or even if they are a few years ahead, it is likely they know someone who is fifty or over. And many elders do not use the computer. If you are a member, you might want to refer back to this article to refresh your thoughts about what it means to belong to AARP. But as a family member, you might want to help some senior to take advantage of the opportunities that re available to them. Spread the word.

There is an on-line sign up that requires that you have your membership card ready in hand – your have to fill out a little form and sign in with e-mail address and a new password you invent. This is a general site that offers daily discounts on a variety of brand name items.   It is called the Everyday Savings Center. They offer savings on brand name items online only.   The information from the AARP Magazine states that you can save up to 60% one some items when shopping online. Some companies even offer free shipping.

They state that currently Target.com, JCPenney.com, and Sears.com regularly offer discounts.

Taking a look myself, I found that some of these are high dollar items and may not offer a lot of savings on some items; but you may be able to find just what you are looking for and save.   www.everydaysavingscenter.com/atm

Another offer is from Earthlink High Speed Internet or Earthlink Dial Up Service.   Go to  www.aarp.org/earthlink   Or phone at 1-888-829-8413.

The Hartford Insurance company offers up to a 15% discount on homeowners and 10% on auto insurance to AARP members. 1-877-203-0933 or www.aarp.thehartford.com/wtd    AARP Members are also eligible for several other types of insurance; such as health, life, and long term care.

Consumer Cellular offers a free phone without a contract required and a number of discounted services when you sign up for a new service. It includes 5% off monthly service with 30 % off selected accessories. 1-888-437-9226 or  www.consumercelluar.com/aarp

Budget truck rental also offers a great discount for those seniors who have things to haul. They give a 20% off the regular price. 1-866-470-7374 - or - www.budgettruck.com/aarp.

It seems that everything today is high tech and I wonder what will become of the days when there are no more newspapers or magazines that you can hold in your hand – what a loss – I just killed a pesky fly with my copy of “AARP – The Magazine,” Honest.   Can’t do that with a computer, huh? With a shortage of newspapers, some smart entrepreneur has already come up with a new invention – a square of artificial grass for the puppy to use inside.  Hmmm, I wonder what folks will wrap their fish in and put down when they paint?

Proverbs 22:1

A GOOD name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
