Mead High School lost to Southridge in the first round of the 4A Washington State playoffs on Friday night. The game was a hard fought battle that took place at Joe Albi Stadium, but Mead couldn't muster enough offense to pull of the victory in the end. The final score of the 4A playoff games was 14-10 in favor of the Kennewick team, thus bringing an end to the 2009 season for Mead High School.
After taking a 7-0 lead on a 58-yard fumble return by Monahan in the first quarter, the offense could only muster a second quarter field goal to bring an end to their scoring on the night. A rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown in the second quarter gave Southridge enough points to hold on to the win, and the scoring would end the same way that the halftime score had predicted.
The Mead players have nothing to be ashamed about from this game, and should look back on this 2009 season as a learning experience. Mead should look forward to trying to return to the playoffs next season, and try to improve upon this season's accomplishments.
Southridge will not go on to play Eisenhower High School, which defeated Walla Walla High School in a game that was played at Eisenhower on Friday night. That game will take place on Friday, November 13th as the first official game of these 4A Washington State High School Playoffs, which will decide which of the final 16 teams get the chance to play for the elite eight and then possibly move one step closer to the 4A State Championship game.
A couple of the teams that look like they could very tough the rest of the way in the4A Washington State Playoffs include the #1 ranked Bothell team, as well as the #2 ranked Skyline team. There are also several other undefeated teams that want their day in the sun, so the 4A division could still be considered wide open as the round of 16 gets ready to play out their games on November 13th.
