You don't take a photograph, you make it. - Ansel Adams

Ansel Adams was born in California and made a name for himself as a photography with his images of the West. He photographed the beauty of the land around him and developed a specialized way of processing those prints. He also demanded the best quality from his photographs, including dragging an amazingly heavy camera through some of California's most rugged lands to capture his images.

Ansel Adams didn't believe in wasting his film and he definitely didn't believe in rushing a photograph. He painstakingly sought to find the best angles and take pictures that truly captured his surroundings. Ansel Adams also had another motivation for taking these amazing pictures - he was also known as an environmentalist. Way back in the 1930's and 1940's Ansel was already concerned with the way human consumption was effecting nature.

Los Angeles is a beautiful city, one with many options for great photography, but sometimes it's nice to take a second look. The obvious and easy way to photograph L.A. is to take pictures of the city and it's hustle and bustle. If you take a second look and follow in the footsteps of some of the great photographers you can find beautiful landscapes and mountains in and around the city. A quick look at a map shows some of the canyons and hills in the city - places like Griffith Park or Runyan Canyon.

Another great thing about L.A. is that this city is surrounded, to the North, by amazing mountains and many great hiking paths. A quick trip towards the outer regions of Los Angeles County will lead to a vast change in scenery. Once you leave the busy city and the traffic that plagues every highway you will quickly come across mountains on both sides of the highway and some truly Ansel Adams type views. If you're looking for something different, the drive will be well worth it. You can hike some of the trails, set up your camera, take a deep breath and focus on making your photograph.
