One of the hardest parts of being a photographer in such a photographer filled city is finding a way to take pictures that aren't like the photos found in fifty other online albums. There are a lot of different places to take pictures in Los Angeles, but each one has been photographed thousands of times by other photographers, locals and tourists. It's hard to feel inspired when you know you're just taking the same picture as everyone else.
Don't lose hope though! You can find creative ways to take pictures that no one else has ever seen and you can wow your friends, family, coworkers and clients with unique photos from well known places.
The first place I'd like to challenge you to take pictures, and gather a little inspiration while you're at it, is The Getty. The Getty is one of L.A.'s more well-known art museums, located in the hills, just off of Sepulveda. The Getty is where you can wander for hours and find inspiration from decades of the world's most famous artists. You can find almost any genre, medium or period of artwork at this museum. This challenge might prove to be a bit daunting as you wander the perfectly manicured gardens, the halls of ancient artwork, followed by amazing modern artists and of course, a camera hanging from the neck of most of The Getty's visitors. All of this can come together to make a lone photographer feel a little intimidated, but there are still ways to creatively photograph such a popular place.
Taking note of the pictures in this blog, you'll see that each one is a view of The Getty at sunset. I decided to take on that particular challenge and capture each picture with a view of the sun, complete with sun glare. Each shot shows a different view of the Getty and takes composition into consideration along with some nice views of a very popular place. It might take a few hours of wandering The Getty to find the shots you want to take, whether those shots include specific people or pieces of art, or simply lines and architecture, but it'll be worth the effort once you bring home those shots. Your hard work will pay off in having shots that are specifically yours.
So I encourage all of you photographers to make this your first challenge! Go to The Getty and take some time to find your inspiration among the beautiful architecture and the amazing artists - past and present. You can wander the gardens or hide out from the rain and while you're there find a way to take some extraordinary pictures that no one else will have in their online albums.
When you've taken your pictures, share them with me! I would love to see the creativity of my fellow L.A. photographers.
