The Broncos have named Nate Webster their starting middle linebacker. I find this move interesting because I know team officials liked Niko Koutouvides a lot, and they signed him thinking he would be the guy. This does prove that Mike Shanahan plays the guys that perform, which is good for locker room morale, but I thought Niko would be the guy. I think Webster is closer to Al Wilson than anything the Broncos have, but I think Koutouvides is very football smart, and I liked how the defense played with him as the starter against Dallas. The MLB is the QB of the defense, and I think the Dallas game has been the defense's best performance in the preseason. Nate will give them athleticism and the big hit, but Niko, to me, would have been the "smart" choice.
Receiver Brandon Marshall is in New York to appeal his suspension. The Broncos are hoping that Nick Barnett's recent reduction of a two-game suspension to one game will be a good sign for Marshall. The Broncos would play Oakland and San Diego without Marshall if things don't change. You know they want Marshall for the home game against San Diego. Mike Shanahan said today he isn't sure if Marshall will win, and doesn't know when the Broncos will know Marshall's fate. Coach Shanahan seems to still be stinging from fighting for Travis Henry's appeal, and then being betrayed by Henry when it was learned the running back had failed a drug test.
