Today the U.S. House of Representatives voted 345-75 to cut off all federal funding to ACORN. This came in the wake of an 83-7 vote by the Senate to cut off federal funding for ACORN on Monday.
The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), the national grassroots organization that serves low- and moderate-income communities, is involved in advocacy and social welfare concerns. The group endorsed and worked for the Obama campaign last year and some believed ACORN would continue to be a powerful player in the Administration. ACORN was on tap to assist the Census Bureau in the decennial census next year. There were questions about their role, especially since they had been involved in voter registration fraud and other questionable practices in the past. The Census Bureau, however, has severed ties with the organization in the wake of scandals involving ACORN staff who advised undercover activists posing as a pimp and a prostitute to break the law in order to obtain housing loans.
Bloomberg.com reports that the Internal Revenue Service is conducting a “thorough review” of its dealings with ACORN. It sounds like another profit stream – this one from helping low-income folks prepare their taxes – may be drying up as well.
Congress is demonstrating in no uncertain terms that it will not be tainted by any association with or support for the beleaguered neighborhood organizing group. President Obama himself once worked for ACORN, and it appeared that the group would receive preferential treatment from the Administration, especially since it had supported Obama during his campaign.
Now the only question seems to be how fast politicians can run away from ACORN. You would think Democrats would have a bit more loyalty toward the folks who helped elect them. But then, when it comes right down to it, survival and the next election cycle is the paramount concern. Everything else is secondary.
But we must give credit where credit is due. How about that Dick Durbin and Roland Burris, the two fine Democrat senators from Illinois? Why, they stood by their ACORN buddies and voted not to cut off federal funding along with five other enlightened senators. This must be a shrewd application of what is becoming known as “the Chicago way.” I guess if you have engaged in certain types of activity to support certain politicians, you can do just about ANYTHING and STILL have their support!
How cool is that?
