Big River Festival of Miles
Big River Running Company is hostings the Big River Festival of Miles on Saturday, May 23rd. The Festival of Miles is a very special event in the St. Louis area. Fans that come out to watch may be treated with the rare act of a runner finishing the mile in under four minutes. Not only is this a great event to watch, but it is also for a great cause.
On New Years Eve in 2007, Brigette Schutzman was injured in a car accident while drive on icey road in Illinois. Schutzman was a standout cross ountry and track athlete at St. Louis University. The diagnosis for Brigette was not very positive. As a result her teammates decided to get together to raise money for the family by hosting the Festival of Miles. The event raised $8,000 last year. As a result of all the help Brigette has received she is not able to walk under her own power. She still dreams of one day being able to run again.
This year the cause is somewhat similar to last years. This year all proceeds will go to the Schutzman family and the Rathmann family. Less than two months after the 2008 Festival of Miles Mike Rathmann, a senior at St. Louis University High School, was paralyzed from the disphragm down. Mike and Brigette both share similar stories because Mike was a track star at SLUH. Just before he was paralyzed he finished in 6th place at the Missouri State Track and Field Championships in the high jump.
The event will begin at 7:00pm and will go for two hours. The main event, the St. Louis Track Club Elite Men's Mile, is scheduled to be run at 8:56pm. Competitors in the event include: Tommy Schmitz (3:58 Mile PR), Adam Perkins (3:38 1500), Jordan Fife (3:59 Mile), Ryan Kleimenhagen (3:59 Mile), Dan Strackeljahn (3:42 1500), Derek Scott (3:42 1500), Jeremy Doherty (3:43 1500), Ben Rosario (4:03 Mile), Carter Snow (1:51 800), Brian Lyons (4:04 Mile), and Eric Fernandez (finished 2nd for University of Arkansas at NCAA Cross Country National Championships).
Not only will there be plenty of competition in the race that could help several participants run under four minutes, but there will also be another motivating factor. The winner of the race received $1000 and then another $1000 from Big River Running Company if they break the four minute barrier.
