This Week comes the highly anticipated first game from Platinum Games, Madworld.
Pick of the Week:
MadWorld (Wii)
Mixing equal parts artsy black and white cel-shaded art with bold streaks of red blood, MadWorld takes its influence from Frank Miller's Sin City, Evil Dead II, Marathon Man, No More Heroes, and the sublime Godhand (Producer by Platinum Games predecessor Clover Studios).
The premise of the game is simple. Varrigan City, walled off under quarantine, has fallen to a deep chaos full of crime and violence. Making the best of a bad situation, Varrigan city is now the setting of an extreme game show. You play Jack, an otherwise regular guy (with a chainsaw for a hand) who must kill a relentless assault of criminals for a chance at cash and prizes...and his life.
MadWorld is, in a word, brutal. Sure there is a lot of satire and black humor in the game, and the game is eschewing attempts at photorealism. But the shock of red in the visuals, not to mention the deviously creative means Jack has at his disposal to kill is almost staggering. Utilizing the environment to dispatch of foes is an essential strategy to survive. It's also deeply satisfying when you can reenact the woodchipper scene in Fargo. Very funny, but brutal.
This is the game "hardcore" Wii fans have been waiting for. The M rating is there for a reason. Have fun.
