Telltale Games, the masters of episodic adventure games, announced yesterday that they were releasing a new series based on the classic Wallace and Gromit series by Aardman Animations.
The game, titled Wallace and Gromit's Grand Adventures, will feature the two well known characters in a variety of new plotlines in line with the whimsical universe they come from.
For those who may not know, Wallace and Gromit centers on an mild-mannered, if absent minded, inventor named Wallace and his harried, practical dog, Gromit as they bumble their way through life in their small British home and the local environs. Along the way are picnics on the moon, master criminal penguins, robot pants, a giant were-rabbit, and, most recently, a cereal killer. This mix of whimsy and suspense make it a great fit for Telltale's style.
Grand Adventures will be, per Telltale's forte, point and click adventures where inventory filling, trial and error, and dialogue are king. Thankfully, Telltale has one of the best writing teams in all of game development and work well with various different comedic writing styles, as evidenced by the great writing on both the Sam and Max and Strongbad games.
The most interesting bit of news in the press release is the announcement that the game will be released on the Xbox Live Arcade alongside the usual PC release, as opposed to the Strongbad series, which was released for WiiWare. A new UI has been developed for the pointing device-less console and, as a "not so subtle" hint noted, there will be future releases by Telltale for XBLA, though time will tell whether these will be ports of existing titles or brand new IP.
