This weekend is the venerable Atlanta tradition that is Dragon*Con.
While the convention is better known for its cosplay and discussion panels, it is an awesome venue for gamers of all kinds. here are some of the highlights you can expect this weekend.
More detailed information about Gaming at Dragon*Con can be found at the Dragon*Con Gaming Home Page.
Board Games
While many gamers have been focused on console or PC gaming, there is also a strong tradition of boardgames among a certain strand of gamer. Many great boardgames have been made in various places in recent years (Germany being one of these places) and their presence at Dragon*Con is a strong one. While there will various board games at the convention, of note will be the Star Fleet and Settlers of Catan tournaments. Star Fleet will be played throught the weekend and the Settlers tournament will be held on Saturday.
Card Games
Card games are ideal for conventions. They take up little room, freeing up space for valuable swag. They usually only require a bit of table space, and are usually pretty quick (at least compared with board games or tabletop RPGs). So it's no surprise that Card games of all stripes will be present at Dragon*Con. From venerable CCG kings such as Magic the Gathering and Pokemon to the recent World of Warcraft CCG, card games will abound. Plus, if you want to get started, all that's needed is a quick trip to the dealer room to get playing!
Tabletop RPGs
The king of games at Dragon*Con and much of the convention has been about the worlds these game have created (Dunegons and Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax was one of the guests at the original Dragon*Con in 1987), There will be various campaign (i.e. on-going setting and story) and non-campaign (a new, one-time only story) games happening at the convention. Much of the gaming will range from World of Darkness settings such as Vampire: the Masquerade, Fantasy based games such as D&D and Hackmaster, or in the multi-genre setting of GURPS. While someone new to tabletop roleplaying may be scared off at first, it is definitely worth trying to get into a non-campaign game of the new 4th edition of Dungeons & Dragons.
Computer Games
While the main focus of Dragon*Con is analog games, computer gaming has proven popular and will be featured this year again. Expect to see entries from the Warcraft series, arcade games, and even some tournaments.
LARPs (Live Action Role Playing)
One of the unique mainstays of Dragon*Con, LARPing is one of the great events you can participate in. With games ranging from a few hours to the whole weekend, you can also fit it in with your schedule. Look for newbie games being offered by groups such as the Atlanta chapter of The Camarilla, the fan club for the World of Darkness series.
Miniatures
With games such as Warhammer 40K about to hit the MMORPG mainstream, it's no surprise there is a surge of interest in the game and others of its ilk. Combining the play of RTS with the social elements of tabletop RPGs, miniature games are great fun. Look for table displays with the handpainted figurines throughout the gaming area.
