The beautiful and colorful Great Forest Park Balloon Race gets underway with the Balloon Glow on Friday, September 18, and continues with the hounds and hare race on Saturday, September 19. Both events will be on Central Field by the Jewel Box in Forest Park.
During The Balloon Glow from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. balloons scheduled to participate in Saturday’s race will be inflated and illuminated by their burners. Besides breathtaking views and great photo opps, the event includes refreshments and food.
Race day on Saturday begins at noon with activities for the entire family. The Purina Children’s Entertainment Area will have pony rides and games, and local talent will be featured during the afternoon on the Entertainment Stage. At 2 p.m. shutterbugs can enter the balloon field to take photographs to enter in a photography competition with prizes awarded for the best shots. At 3 p.m. skydivers will showcase their daring by landing on the field.
The main event begins at 4:30 p.m. when the Energizer Hot “Hare” Balloon lifts off to begin the race, followed 15 minutes later by the launch of the 70 “hound” balloons that will be following the “hare.” The winning balloon will be the one that drops a birdseed baggie closest to where the Energizer Bunny lands.
