Egypt is rich in ancient treasures like the famous pyramids and Sphinx, but it also has cosmopolitan cities like Cairo, beautiful beaches that are great for water sport, and excellent opportunities to explore nature and the country’s vast desert.
For an introduction to Egypt’s rich past, visit the Egyptian Museum which contains relics dating back to 4000 BC including magnificent treasures from Tutankhamnu’s tomb.
Try shopping in the bazaar stalls along the small alleyways and streets that lead to Al Azhar mosque, the city’s oldest mosque and university. When visiting the mosque, be sure to cover up—long sleeves and pants/skirts for everyone, and women must cover their heads with a scarf.
Travel on to Luxor where you can visit the Valley of the Kings. This phenomenal setting contains the once hidden tombs of over 62 Pharaohs including Tutankhamun and Ramses III and IV. Here you can see brightly painted hieroglyphics and paintings on the walls of the tombs.
On the opposite bank of the Nile you can visit the Luxor Temple and huge Karnak Temple Complex. Built over 1500 years, the Complex is a sprawl of courtyards, halls and sanctuaries.
Many visitors to Egypt elect to take a Nile cruise. Cruises are usually from three to seven nights, and most depart from Luxor and travel on to Aswan, where the temples of Kom Ombo and Edfu are popular attractions. Here you also can visit famous Aswan Dam. Another popular side trip is to Elephantine Island or Kitchener’s Island, both are among the islands that surround Aswan.
