Beverly Roberts: She Knew Bogie Before Bacall

Beverly Roberts: From a 1940s Hollywood actress (above) to the successful head of the Theatre Authority.
Below: Roberts starred with a young Bogart in the 1936 film: "Two Against the World," from Warner Bros.
There is the famed
Beverly Hills and of course, the
Beverly Hillbillies, but there is only one
Beverly Roberts. Lauren Bacall might have married Bogie in 1945, but Roberts starred with him way back in 1936 in
Two Against The World. Educated in New York and London, Roberts came to Hollywood in 1936 with impeccable stage credits; she'd just spent several seasons with
Eva le Galliene's Civic Repertory before being signed by Warner Bros., where she played opposite such luminaries as Bogart
and others like Al Jolson. After appearing in 20 films, Roberts returned to the stage in 1940 where she was accompanied by such Big Band acts as the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra. She left the world pf performing arts behind, and for 24 years, she became an executive officer for the Theatre Authority of New York, which during its heyday, booked such acts as the Beatles, Jerry Lewis & Dean Martin and Leslie Uggams, to name but a few.
In my book-in-progress, Beverly Roberts: Still the Life of the Party, at 94, she speaks candidly about what is was like working at Warner Bros. (a real man’s studio), what she thought about Jolson (not much) and how Errol Flynn stopped her from making a fool of herself (it had something to do with lighting up a funny-looking cigarette).
Considered by many to be the life of the party, Roberts who can “still touch her toes without any trouble,” said while most of her Hollywood friends “have left the party,” she’s “still at the party and living everyday to its fullest.” ###
