The Weekend Theater is not one to let grass grow under its feet.
Instead of kicking back this summer, the gang at Little Rock's busy theater is staging Rent, the rock opera (or you could also just call it a musical) by Jonathan Larson inspired by Giacomo Puccini's opera La Boheme. The crazy success of Rent on Broadway (the show ran there for 12 years) was overshadowed by the fact that Larson died of a brain aneurysm the night before his show opened off-Broadway.
(Personal note: I vividly remember reading a glowing New York Times profile on Larson before Rent opened. What a tragedy and loss for American theater).
The Weekend Theater production is directed by John Thompson with musical direction by the ubiquitous (and terrific) Lori Isner.
The cast includes Gabriel Washam, Greg Robinson, Laura Choate, Micah Qualls, Christopher B. Straw, Brandon Nichols, Darren Drone.
Apparently some of the performances are already sold out and some additional Thursday dates have been added.
Rent kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 10 in the Weekend Theater performance space at Seventh and Chester streets. The show, sponsored by Moses Tucker Real Estate, continues at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays through August 1. Tickets are $18 for general admission and $14 for students and seniors age 65 and older.
Rent is recommended for mature audiences. For more information or reservations, call (501) 374-3761 or visit www.weekendtheater. org
