In the wall-to-wall coverage of Michael Jackson's death the CNN crawler noted that an adaptation of the video of “Thriller” was Broadway bound.
Of course. Jukebox musicals have been created out of much thinner material (like one-hit wonders Madness for instance) and theaters – whether they be part of Broadway or down here in Arkansas – are still snapping up the shows that mine the hits of Abba, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash or whoever.
Early this year it was announced that the prominent Nederlander Organization acquired the rights to “Thriller” and was tentatively planning on using songs from Jackson's Thriller and Off the Wall. Jackson was said to be involved in the construction of the show.
Our guess is that Jackson's death will only speed the show to Broadway. But then musicals are notoriously hard to put together and one can only imagine the army of lawyers it will take to sort out Jackson's estate. Still, if “Thriller” the musical can harness even part of Jackson's flair for the theatrical (see this performance for “Smooth Criminal” for evidence), then it will be something to see.
