Senator Ted Kennedy's death marks an end of an era. The larger than life Kennedy family played an important role in American politics for decades. John F. Kennedy served in Congress from 1947 through 1960 and became President of the United States in 1960 before his assassination in 1963. Robert F. Kennedy was the United States Attorney General and a U.S. Senator from New York until his assassination in 1968.

Ted Kennedy was a U.S. Senator from 1962 through 2009. He spent over four decades in the senate tirelessly championing liberal causes: environmental issues, health care, human rights, the protection of the Constitution and helping the disenfranchised. He spoke out against plans to go to war in Iraq. In Congress he was a bridge attempting to work across party lines.

Ted Kennedy and his brothers made a difference through their dedicated public service, commitment to human rights, freedom and liberal ideologies.

Famous quotes:

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream shall never die."

"With Barack Obama, we will turn the page on the old politics of misrepresentation and distortion. With Barack Obama we will close the book on the old politics of race against race, gender against gender, ethnic group against ethnic group, and straight against gay."

“The Constitution does not just protect those whose views we share; it also protects those with whose views we disagree.”

“It won't be 'mission accomplished' on the economy until average Americans are secure in their jobs and can provide for their families.”

"My brother need not be idealized or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life, to be remembered as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it."

“Thus, the controversy about the Moral Majority arises not only from its views, but from its name - which, in the minds of many, seems to imply that only one set of public policies is moral and only one majority can possibly be right.”

"What we have in the United States is not so much a health-care system as a disease-care system."

“Frankly, I don't mind not being President. I just mind that someone else is.”

“The Republicans are looking after the financial interests of the wealthiest individuals in this country.”

“There was no imminent threat. This was made up in Texas, announced in January to the Republican leadership that war was going to take place and was going to be good politically. This whole thing was a fraud.”

“We want to support our troops because they didn't make the decision to go there... but I don't think it should be open-ended. We ought to have a benchmark where the administration has to come back and give us a report.”

John F. Kennedy
Famous quotes:

“A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on.”

“Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.”

“All of us do not have equal talent, but all of us should have an equal opportunity to develop our talents.”

“Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.”

“There are risks and costs to a program of action, but they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction.”

“Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names.”

“Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.”

“The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment; but it is no less a magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy.”

“A man does what he must-in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality.”

“Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures.”

“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.”

Robert F. Kennedy
Famous quotes:

“Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total; of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.”

“But suppose God is black? What if we go to Heaven and we, all our lives, have treated the Negro as an inferior, and God is there, and we look up and He is not white? What then is our response?”

“I was the seventh of nine children. When you come from that far down you have to struggle to survive.”

“There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why... I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”

“Whenever men take the law into their own hands, the loser is the law. And when the law loses, freedom languishes.”

“Moral courage is a more rare commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence.”

“Progress is a nice word. But change is its motivator. And change has its enemies.”

“I thought they'd get one of us, but Jack [John F. Kennedy], after all he's been through, never worried about it. I thought it would be me.”
