Esther agrees, July is going to be a great month.

Pittsburgh is always a good place for horror fans. The city has a rich history associated with the genre and that history has been kept alive through the dedication of fans, filmmakers, and aficionados. This month in particular will see the convergence of events that will turn this city into a ghoulish wonderland.

First things first, tomorrow night (Tuesday July 7th) will mark the beginning of filming for the local horror short A Nightmare on the Town. The production is looking for extras for Tuesday night in Monessen, plus a second shoot the night of the 21st (also a Tuesday) at the Rex Theater in the Southside. If you’ve ever wanted to be torn to shreds on screen, here’s your chance. Anyone interested should email the director, Jordan Paley, at nightmareonthetown@gmail.com.

Up next we have releases of four brand new horror titles being released on successive Fridays. Starting this Friday (July 10th) at the Regent Square Theater is the psychological scifi thriller Moon which has been earning praise at each festival stop it makes. A week later (July 17th) the locally filmed slasher Homecoming will be hitting the theaters in limited release. After that the widely advertised Orphan will be coming out on July 24th. This film is getting a wide release and should be screening at the AMC theater at the Waterfront and the Southside Works Cinema. And finally on the 31st, Chan-wook Park’s highly anticipated vampire film Thirst will be getting a limited release. Local theaters where Homecoming and Thirst are screening will be posted here as soon as the information is made public.

Sadly not getting a theatrical release here in Pittsburgh is the Canadian zombie film Pontypool. This film brings together the winning combination of zombies, radio DJs, and linguistics and will be available on DVD beginning July 21st.

Ongoing throughout the summer is the Moonlit Matinee Film Festival being held each Friday and Saturday night at the Oaks Theater in Oakmont. Friday night shows begin at 10 PM and Saturday shows at midnight. This weekend (July 10-11th) the fest will screen Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D. See the 1982 classic as it was meant to be seen! Then, on the 24-25th, the fest will host the Pittsburgh premiere of the cult sexploitation/blaxploitation film Black Devil Doll. And then MMFF will round out the month with Return of the Living Dead on July 31st and August 1st.

And of course the big event that really makes this month special is the Southside Zombie Walk and Concert for the Living Dead on Saturday July 18th. This annual event is hosted by The It’s Alive Show and this month will mark its fourth year. A zombie walk, for the uninitiated is a congregation of horror fans who meet at a given time and place dressed in full zombie makeup and costume. The faux-undead then wander around the Southside much to the delight of news media and passersby.

Shamblers will congregate at the Town Tavern between 7 and 8 pm and will take to the streets led by Professor Emcee Square himself until a live taping of The It’s Alive Show begins at the Rex Theater at 9 pm including side acts, music, and zombie dancing girls. Make sure to read up on the rules for participating in the zombie walk at The It’s Alive Show website.

So, let’s recap:

July 7th: A Nightmare on the Town shoot #1
July 10th: Moon
July 10-11th: Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D
July 17th: Homecoming
July 18th: Southside Zombie Walk and Concert for the Living Dead
July 21st: A Nightmare on the Town shoot #2 at the Rex Theater
July 21st: Pontypool on DVD
July 24th: Orphan
July 24-25th: Black Devil Doll
July 31st: Thirst
July 31st- August 1st: Return of the Living Dead

I’m stoked and honestly, you should be too. If you can manage to make it to even half of these events, July is going to be one of the goriest, ghastliest months you’ve had in a long time. Mark your calendars and stock up on fake blood. This is going to be a great month.
