Raise your hand if you’re getting sick of remakes. I know I’m getting sick of writing about them. But if they keep bringing film production to Pittsburgh, then they can’t be all bad.
Hitting theaters October 2nd, ‘Sorority Row’ was shot right here in Pittsburgh last year, helping to keep our city’s tradition of horror production alive. The film is a remake of 1983 slasher flick ‘The House on Sorority Row,’ which itself was more or less a rehash of the concept behind the Friday the 13th franchise: deformed kid watches nubile teenage girls kill his psycho-bitch mother so he wreaks revenge on them and anyone else that happens to be around.
From all indications though, it seems that this remake has taken extreme liberties with the original. The trailer implies that they’ve replaced the avenging mutant son with an avenging hooded ghost, which seems rather reminiscent of the Thai avenging ghost movie ‘Sick Nurses’, though I doubt ‘Sorority Row’ will reach that level of brutality. In all honesty, I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole avenging ghost shtick is a just a red herring and this ends up more like ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer.’
In any case, this actually looks like it might turn out to be a decent slasher flick in its own right, regardless of how faithful it stays to the original. Plus, any movie gets bonus points for casting Carrie Fisher. With every movie that she acts in, the world gets just that much closer to being a better place. Really the only other actors you might recognize in this film are Jamie Chung (‘Dragonball Evolution’) and Julian Morris (‘Cry_Wolf’ and ‘Donkey Punch’).
I’ve posted the trailers for both the remake and the original for you to compare and contrast. Then, comment below and make your predictions for how the remake will play out: Are they going to play the Jason Voorhees card again, or is Caspar wielding an ice pick?
