That’s right kids, the reboot of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street is already set for two sequels. The news was broken by Bloody Disgusting when they spoke to Jackie Earle Haley as production of the new film is finishing up. Of course, just because Haley’s signed on for two more films doesn’t mean they can’t still pull the plug if the first one does poorly. But honestly, who really thinks that’s going to happen?

Haley is taking over the role of Freddy Krueger from legend Robert Englund who originated the role and more or less was Krueger from the original in 1984 to Freddy vs Jason in 2003. While a lot of people were upset that he will not be reprising his famed role for the new film, Englund himself has conceded that it’s time for him to hang up the striped sweater and knife glove. The slasher veteran just turned 62 and has been picking up supporting roles in other horror films like Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and Zombie Strippers! in addition to a variety of voice acting roles. In interviews Englund has expressed support for the remake citing the potential that new special effects and CGI techniques hold for the film.

Despite a prominent role in the 1976 film Bad News Bears at the age of 15, Jackie Earle Haley’s most notable role to date was playing Rorschach in the recent big screen adaption of Watchmen. Even the fans that are sad to see Englund leave the role seem to agree that if anyone has to replace him, Haley is a damn good choice. If we took away nothing else from Watchmen, we at least know that Jackie Earle Haley has got the whole sociopath thing down pat.

Other actors in the upcoming film that have established geek cred include Kyle Gallner who recently starred in The Haunting in Connecticut and appeared in a few episodes of Smallville as Bart Allen aka Impulse (a younger version of the Flash). A Nightmare on Elm Street will also feature Katie Cassidy who starred in the remake of Black Christmas and is also appearing in the miniseries Harper’s Island.

The news of two anticipated Elm Street sequels when the movie hasn’t even wrapped filming is a tad unexpected seeing as New Line won’t even commit 100% yet to a Friday the 13th sequel. Hopefully New Line’s optimism about the film is a sign that at this point it looks freaking amazing, and of course we’ll still more than likely see Jason Voorhees back on the big screen again, maybe even as soon as next year. With the list of classic remakes and their subsequent sequels getting longer and longer (Halloween, Friday the 13th, Black Christmas, Sorority Row, My Bloody Valentine, and now A Nightmare on Elm Street), splatter fans can look forward to a new slasher renaissance the likes of which we haven’t seen since the 1980s. Promiscuous teens beware.
