Former Washington Capital Sergei Fedorov was officially introduced to the Russian media as a Metallurg Magnitogorsk player. Fedorov will join his brother Fedor in Siberia. Russia's Sovetsky Sport covered Fedorov's arrival.
"Good afternoon, friends, colleagues," - Fedorov said. "I arrived in Russia just yesterday and that's why I cannot even explain the feelings that are taking over me. I want to thank the people who helped me get together and play with my brother for the same team."
Fedorov was given a Metallurg jersey with number 18 on the back. Why not the usual 91? Fedorov explained: "This is symbolic. Before leaving for the NHL I had number 18 on my jersey when I played for CSKA. So I decided to get back to it." When it was pointed out that the number is the reverse of his brother's (Fedor will wear number 81), Sergei said: "True... And I just noticed it now."
Fedorov also confirmed that he did want to remain a Capital. But it was not meant to be. "To be honest, I wanted to sign a new contract with Washington. But the management did not offer me anything certain. I decided not to drag it out. Season in the KHL starts earlier. I want to get ready properly. My career in the NHL is over. But it is just beginning in Russia!"
