Alex Ovechkin has done it again. How many times are we all going to say it? Coming into the game against the Nashville Predators, Ovechkin was sitting on top of the goal scoring leader board with 7 goals, which is the exact number of goals the entire Nashville Predators team had before their game against the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin scored two goals in regulation and the game winner in the shootout to win it for the Capitals.
One of the most confusing and funny moment (if I can say that) involving Ovechkin happened after Alex scored his goal in the shootout. A lot of fans started throwing hats out thinking that Ovechkin had a hat-trick. The episode prompted Bruce Boudreau to say the following at a press conference after the game: “"I don't think it's ever been done in the history of hockey. It's a Washington original."
After the game my Sovetsky Sport colleague Dmitry Shumin and I caught up with the first star of the game Alex Ovechkin for a brief chat.
Do you even know that this is the best start of the season in your career?
No. I didn’t even know it. I didn’t look at it.
Did you know that coming into this game you scored 7 goals, and the entire Nashville Predators team had scored 7 goals?
Well, I did know what my goal count was, but I didn’t know about the Predators. It wasn’t on my mind at all.
Comparing to last season, do you feel better about your conditioning than you did last year?
No, I don’t think so, maybe I just have a little bit more luck now, get some more bounces go my way. But I wouldn’t say I am in a better form than I was last year.
Similar to the game against the New Jersey Devils, you started really well and then slowed down somewhat.
We just didn’t score when we had our chances to do so, especially in the first 5 minutes of the second period when we had the momentum and overall possession.
Ilya Kovalchuk scored a pair of goals tonight as well. Are you anticipating a hot race for the Richard Trophy?
I am honestly extremely happy for him.
How about some of your luck for the Redskins? I heard you told Chris Cooley after the game against the San Jose Sharks that you had not washed the Redskins jersey you were wearing when the Redskins last won.
No, that jersey was given to me as a gift by Chris Cooley. It was his actual game worn jersey. It also had his autograph. Why would I wash that jersey with an autograph? As for me helping them, I think I should stick to what I do.
