The next presentation of the Silicon Valley Jewish Film Festival, "Blessed is the Match," can be seen on Wednesday, Oct. 21. This docudrama is the definitive story of the life and legacy of 20th century Jewish heroine Hannah Senesh.

Hannah Senesh stands amongst the pantheon of heroes of Israel. Recruited by the Haganah to serve in British intelligence, in 1944 she was sent on a secret mission to Hungary, where she was captured and subjected to unimaginably brutal interrogation at the hands of the Hungarian police and later the collaborationist Arrow Cross. She refused, even unto death by firing squad, to betray her comrades or her mission. This docudrama is the definitive story of her life and legacy. Guest appearances by Shimon Peres and Sir Martin Gilbert, the dean of Holocaust historians, add further luster to this film.

Following the film on Sunday, October 25th, you can meet and ask questions of Roberta Grossman, director/producer of Blessed is the Match. Roberta is an award-winning filmmaker with a passion for history and social justice. She was the series producer and co-writer of 500 Nations, the eight-hour CBS mini-series on Native Americans hosted by Kevin Costner. Grossman's feature documentary, Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action, premiered in February 2005, and has screened and won awards at more than forty festivals worldwide. Other writing and producing credits include In the Footsteps of Jesus, a four-hour special for the History Channel; The History of Christianity: the First Thousand Years, a four-hour special on A&E; and Heroines of the Hebrew Bible and Judas for the A&E series Mysteries of the Bible.

In keeping with its goal of attracting a diverse audience and expanding its reach in Silicon Valley, the SVJFF will be showing films at four venues:

  • On Sundays at The Camera 12 theater in downtown San Jose
  • On Wednesday evenings at The Camera 7 theater at the Pruneyard Shopping Center in Campbell
  • And on various dates at the Cubberley Theater in Palo Alto and at the Oshman Family JCC on the Taube Koret Campus for Jewish Life.

Tickets and information are available online at the SVJFF web site www.svjff.org, or by calling 1-800-838-3006. You can buy tickets to individual shows and special events or become a patron donor to the Festival, which this year was certified as a 501c3 non-profit organization and is now a totally independent arts entity.
