This past week ushered in the first fall rain. However, it wasn't just an early rain but a true winter storm with 70 mph winds and almost 8 inches of rain in the Santa Cruz Mountains where I live. In true form, within hours of the storm's onset, trees had fallen on power lines and our electricity went out. I was without power for three days.

On Tuesday evening my husband came home with storm supplies: batteries and candles. However, he didn't just bring home storm candles, he brought home Shabbat candles. His rationale: "They burn for a really long time."

So, for two nights, our home was bathed in the lovely glow of Shabbat candles even though it wasn't Shabbat. It was lovely to bring in a little bit of Shabbat to the middle of the week. In fact, while the power outage slowed things down considerably, it gave our home a Shabbat feel in general. We used no Internet, watched no television, worked little, and went to bed early. Thus, the candles were a fitting addition!

So, the next time you have a power outage, consider opening a box of Shabbat candles. You might be surprised at the different energy it lends to your storm experience.
