Would your child be able to survive if he or she fell into water? Water safety becomes a top concern during the spring and summer months, but water safety is important year round. With the proliferation of hot tubs and all of the drainage ditches found in the Hampton Roads area, parents must be concerned about water survival, not just swimming skills.
Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) helps train babies and toddlers how to swim for survival. Infants as young as 6 to 12 months learn how to rollback to a float. One to six year olds learn how to rollback to float as well as the swim-float-swim sequence.
Lessons are one-on-one: the ISR instructor and your child only. Lessons last 10 minutes and are held Monday through Friday at Dive Quarters in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach. The length of the course depends on how long it takes your child to learn the skills and ranges from 4 to 6 weeks.
The last week of the course, your child swims in summer weight clothes one day and winter weight clothes on a separate day. This allows your child to practice "real world" swimming survival skills, as many children fall into the water fully clothed.
As a parent whose daughter has gone through the course, the first week was the hardest. Then my daughter started to catch on and was less fussy. It was amazing to see how her confidence blossomed each week in the course. Part of the course is learning how to keep your child safe. It is reassuring to see how she now responds in the water.
