Chances are, when you first found out you were expecting a little bundle of joy, you did what all expectant moms do instinctively. You went shopping.  Maybe you went a little overboard on baby toys and clothing. Now, your baby has out grown her beautiful newborn clothes, baby toys, and other baby equipment and you are left trying to find a way to store it, keep it clean or organize it.

Have you considered giving it to someone who will use it? Freecycle can help you find the perfect home for your baby's outgrown treasures.  Freecycle keeps gently used items from filling up landfills (or your already packed to maximum capacity closet). You list your item, people who are interested contact you directly and come to pick it up from you. It's a really simple process!

How to use Freecycle.org in the New York area:

  • Go to the New York City group on Freecycle.org
  • Review the rules and guidelines for posting carefully and be sure to follow them!
  • Post a message with "Offer" in your subject and state what you are offering to freecycle.
  • State clearly and honestly the condition and a description of the article.
  • Watch your email for interested replies. If you receive multiple replies, you will have to choose who gets your treasure.
  • Be sure to go back and post when the article offered has found it's new home.

Freecycle is also a great place to find free kids stuff, so keep an eye out for anything you think your child may enjoy. Take the time to check recalled product listings and safety standards before bringing a new baby or toddler toy home.

I know it may be difficult at first to part with any of your baby's possessions. Pack a few of your absolute favorites away to keep forever and try to let go of the rest.  Don't worry, they'll be more big kid stuff crowding up your home in no time!
