After a rough end to the regular season, the Minnesota Lynx got some good news on Thursday night, as they won the WNBA's 2010 draft lottery. The pick that ended up in the top spot was originally property of the New York Liberty, but the Lynx acquired New York's first round pick in a May trade.
Minnesota will also hold on to its own first- round pick, which will be the No. 4 selection in the draft.
The Lynx will add the two top- 4 picks to an already young and talented core that includes Siemone Augustus, Candice Wiggins, Renee Montgomery and 2009 breakout performer Nicky Anosike. Minnesota was one of the better teams in the league at the beginning of the 2009 season, but struggled mightily after Augustus suffered a season- ending injury on June 17. Minnesota had started off 4-1 with Augustus in the lineup, but won only 10 of its final 29 games after Augustus went down.
Some of the top collegiate prospects for the 2010 WNBA draft include: F Jayne Appel of Stanford, G Tyra Grant of Penn State, C Tina Charles from UConn and F Alysha Clark of Middle Tennessee. Lynx fans will have the opportunity to follow these and other top players during the NCAA season, which tips off in the coming weeks.
The draft will take place in April 2010.
