How did the top ten teams at the 2009 NCAA Division I championships do in terms of having individual wrestlers make the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Individual All-Academic Team for 2008-2009?
Eight of the top ten placing programs at this past March’s national championships had at least one wrestler who earned a spot on the NWCA All-Academic Team.
Here’s a team-by-team look, in order of placement in the team standings at the 2009 NCAAs:
1. University of Iowa: Brent Metcalf, NCAA runner-up at 149 pounds, is a junior Sociology major with a 3.22 GPA;
2. Ohio State: J. Jaggers, 141-pound NCAA champ, a senior Communication major, with a 3.02 GPA… and Corey Morrison, NCAA qualifier at heavyweight, a senior Mathematics major with a 3.44 GPA;
3. Iowa State: Tyler Clark, 125-pound NCAA qualifier, a sophomore majoring in Finance, with a 3.2 GPA… and Nick Fanthorpe, 133 lb. NCAA qualifier, a junior Community and Regional Planning major, with a 3.23 GPA;
4. University of Nebraska – Lincoln: Craig Brester, 197-pound NCAA runner-up, a junior Mechanical Systems Management major with a 3.25 GPA… and Tucker Lane, NCAA qualifier at heavyweight, a redshirt freshman with a 3.919 GPA in Communication Studies;
5. Cornell University: Justin Kerber, NCAA qualifier at 184, a sophomore Economic Management major with a 3.76 GPA… and Jordan Leen, NCAA All-American (3d place at 157), a senior with a 3.29 GPA in Nutritional Science;
6. Edinboro University: Torsten Gillespie, 149 lb NCAA qualifier, a sophomore with a 3.68 GPA in Theoretical Computer Science… and Jarrod King, 165-pound NCAA champ, a senior majoring in Health and Physical Education – Human Performance, with a 3.78 GPA;
7. University of Missouri – Columbia: Max Askren, NCAA All-American (5th place at 197 lbs), a senior General Studies major with a 3.334 GPA;
8. University of Illinois – Champaign-Urbana: No individuals on the NWCA All-Academic Team;
9. University of Wisconsin – Madison: No individuals on the NWCA All-Academic Team;
10. University of Maryland – College Park: Hudson Taylor, NCAA All-American (3d place at 197), a redshirt junior majoring in Interactive Performance Art, with a 3.298 GPA.
To make the NWCA Individual All-Academic wrestling team, an individual wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule, and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. The other way to qualify for the All-Academic team is have a 3.0 cumulative and been an NCAA All-American.
A total of 73 individuals representing 45 schools are being honored this year on the All-Academic Team. Among the honorees: 51 NCAA qualifiers, 17 NCAA All-Americans, 8 NCAA finalists, and 5 national champions.
