For the five former college wrestlers competing at Saturday night's UFC 104 event at Staples Center in Los Angeles, it was a mostly successful evening... with only one losing his bout.

Here is a brief synopsis of the results:

  • Chase Gormley: In his match vs Stefan Struve, Gormley, a NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) All-American wrestler at both Montana State-Northern University and Lindenwood University, was put into a triangle by Struve, and tapped out at 4:04 of the first round.
  • Chael Sonnen: The former University of Oregon wrestler managed to score a unanimous 30-27 decision from all three judges in his match vs Yushin Okami that went the full three rounds.
  • Ryan Bader:  "Darth" Bader, a two-time NCAA Division I All-American for Arizona State University, went up against Eric Schafer, winning the first and third rounds on all three officials' scoresheets. Final result: Bader winning a unanimous decision, 29-27, 29-28, and 29-28.
  • Anthony Johnson: The former matman from California's Lassen Community College made very short work of his opponent, Yoshiyuki Yoshida, scoring a knockout just 41 seconds into the first round.
  • Cain Velasquez: This Arizona State two-time All-American took on Ben Rothwell. The three officials scored the first round 10-8, 10-8, and 10-7 for Velasquez. In the second, the former Sun Devil went on a relentless attack, firing lefts to Rothwell's head. The referee called the fight at 58 seconds of the second round, declaring Velasquez the victor.
