Fireworks display in San Francisco by Veronica Cassell

With fireworks, games, free fishing and more, this year’s 4th of July will certainly be memorable.  With festivities kicking off on Friday the 3rd, the July 4th celebrations should make for a great weekend in the Bay Area.

A few of the highlights of this 4th of July weekend include:

July 3rd Friday Night Fireworks - Bodega Bay is hosting a fireworks show over the water just after the sun fades from the sky on Friday night, the 3rd of July.  A great precursor to the various shows going on around the Bay Area on the 4th of July, the Bodega Bay fireworks are going to be a delightfully wonderful kick-off to the weekend.  Check-out more specifics by visiting http://www.bodegabay.com/baynews.html or calling (707) 875-3866.

July 4th- Tug of War - Bolinas and Stinson Beach are battling it out on the 4th of July in a pull-off for town supremacy.  This annual tug of war between those from Stinson and Bolinas is scheduled to commence at 9 am.  For those in the area, this yearly event is exciting to participate in, or just watch.

Free Fishing Day – Be a fisherman for the 4th!  July 4th offers those in California the opportunity to fish without the commitment of a fishing license.  Try out your fishing skills for free this Saturday and gauge your fishing talent.

Lighthouse Illumination Pt. Reyes - Being a lighthouse keeper is a special honor, and on July 4th a group of individuals will have the opportunity to experience the life of a lighthouse keeper for themselves.  Meeting at the Lighthouse Visitor Center at the designated time on the 4th of July, the group will engage in duties reminiscent of a lighthouse keeper's.  More information about the experience and for making reservations can be found at the Pt. Reyes website or by calling (415) 669-1534.

Crabbing Tutorial – A chance to learn more information about the crabs in the Bay Area and how to legally catch them.  With tutorials and conversation, you’ll leave knowing more about the guidelines for crab catching legally and some techniques for success.

And for watching the spectacular shows of light around the Bay Area on the 4th of July, a few notable places include the event happening all day at Pier 39, concluding with the firework festivities, or the Berkeley Marina, where live entertainment and a firework show is also scheduled.  Jack London Square is expected to be popular with the scheduled music and activities for the night of the 4th.  While in San Jose, a firework show can be seen after sundown at the San Jose Giants game.  And for those interested in enjoying the fireworks and partying on a ship, the U.S.S. Hornet is being used for a 4th of July celebration, including music for guests on the ship, entertainment options for the kids, and food and drinks.

July 5th Beach Clean-ups - Crissy Field and Ocean Beach are undergoing beach clean-ups this Sunday in an effort to make the beaches cleaner and more habitable for the birds returning to the Bay Area, especially after the long 4th of July weekend.  Specifics regarding the experience and for making reservations can be attained at this website.

Hope everyone finds some fun activity to do this July 4th weekend!
