For those who have been around the Bay Area long enough, you most likely have heard of the shark alerts that occur at Stinson Beach and Bolinas from time to time. The shark sightings are fairly common in the Stinson beach waters. Due to Stinson and Bolinas’ placement on the coast, they are a part of an area that has an abundant number of seals, which make the waters prime for sharks to feed.
As reported most recently, the waters of Stinson and Bolinas are one of the most shark attack afflicted areas in the U.S. While the shark attacks and fatalities are not near the numbers found in some of the other waters around the U.S., such as Florida and South Carolina, the fact that Stinson and Bolinas make the list is worth noting.
Sharks at Stinson Beach and Bolinas have a propensity for getting closer to shallower depths of water in their quest to feed on the multitude of seals in the area. And that makes surfers vulnerable to attacks because of the depth needed to catch larger waves. However, with the thousands of seals and therefore thousands of potential meals for sharks off the California coast, the number of attacks in comparison to the number of thousands of people that flood the waters of both beaches seems very minimal. So, despite making the list of shark attack waters in the U.S., Stinson and Bolinas still make great beach getaways.
