Bicycle Sunday is another way that Seattle is living up to its Bicycle-Friendly city designation. For Bicycle Sundays the city closes Lake Washington Boulevard to motorized traffic from 10 AM - 6 PM from Mt. Baker Beach south to Seward Park. Sponsored by Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Cascade Bicycle Club, with the support of the Seattle Police Department, it's a wonderful opportunity for families to enjoy bicycling together in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere. Only July 5 (Holiday weekend), July 26 and August 2 (SeaFair) will NOT be Bicycle Sundays. So there are plenty of opportunities all summer for some bicycle enjoyment on Lake Washington Boulevard.

I was at Seward Park this past Sunday (June 14) volunteering to sell and fit bike helmets for Cascade Bicycle Club. Even though I wasn't riding my bike, I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon. Wonderful people came by our table either for information or to buy a helmet or have the one they were wearing correctly fitted. I particularly enjoyed some very patient children who allowed me to properly adjust their helmets. One 5 year old had an especially keen sense of humor. He asked me to "fix my dad's helmet." I figured that his dad didn't really need help, but he gamely played along. Before they left per the dad's request, I shared a few safety tips with the budding cyclist as well.

Cascade will have volunteers present with helmets at all Bicycle Sundays. They're a great deal - CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) approved helmet for only $10 - a value for anyone, but it's particularly good for buying a child's helmet, or any new rider when you don't think you want to make a big investment, but definitely want to be safe.
