With the election of Mike McGinn as mayor, Seattle has a pro-bicycle mayor. Candidate opponent Joe Mallahan conceded the mayoral election on Monday giving way for Mike to declare victory. Though decidedly an underdog, a grassroots campaign carried Mike McGinn into the mayor's office. His previous role as the Cascade Chapter Chair of the Sierra Club, he had already established himself in the environmental community. The greatest part of his campaign support was an outgrowth of this activism.
Mike's support extended beyond the Sierra Club. Cascade Bicycle Club endorsed Mike as soon as he won the primary. The club's support was originally with Mayor Greg Nickols because he had worked with Cascade on the development of the Bicycle Master Plan. However, with Nickels' loss in the primary, the Club swung their support for Mike McGinn saying, "Michael McGinn is among the most pro-bike and sustainable transportation candidates we’ve ever worked with." Not only does Mike McGinn support bicycling, as one slogan proclaimed, "Mike bikes". He rode his bicycle to events simply as is his habit as a daily commuter. Cascade strongly believes Mike will continue to move Seattle forward as a green city.
As stated in July in this column, "With so much yet to do to encourage bicycling and enhance safety of riders in the region, we must elect pro-bike officials." Seattle, it looks like you have. The bicyclists of Seattle have great expectations for this new mayor.
