As our national legislators continue to vote yes to spending more and more on war, local officials in Washington have had to cut teachers and staff due to lack of funding.
Friday was the deadline for sending out pink slips for next school year, and 3,000 teachers and staff were laid off. I am as concerned for the people left standing and our children as I am for those laid off. How are they going to manage those large classrooms much less creatively teach with an ever-dwindling teachers and less support?
Meanwhile, back in the other Washington, Obama and his fellow politicians continue to pour billions into the bankrupt U.S. war machine. He is intent on increasing the war in Afghanistan while keeping his promise to decrease the troops in Iraq. Then, there's the issue of Iran.
In our Washington State the layoffs are in response to the state cutting a $1.5 billion from school funding. That's less than the cost of a single B-2 Spirit (also known as the "Stealth Bomber"). My vote is for one less B-2 and a great education for all the children of Washington.
According to the Washington State Education Association, 2,922 teachers and certified staff received layoff notices. Also included are 332 paraprofessionals, for a total of 3,254 people laid off thus far, and the WEA expects that number to continue rising.
I favor people not war planes. What do you think? Post your comments. I read them all.
May we all see the wisdom of livingry rather than weaponry and may our "leaders" wake up to the reality of books not bombs.
