                  Obama can do stand-up comedy.

President Obama’s has a sense of humor, or at least he's willing and able to deliver his writers' zingers.  At his first White House Correspondents' Association dinner Saturday night he included racy punch lines that had some guests laughing out loud and others stunned.

Obama got an easy laugh early in his speech when, as he appeared genuine in saying,  “I’m going to speak from the heart; I’m going to speak off the cuff,” after which two teleprompters noisily rose in front of the dais.

Some of his more risky jokes included the following.

He said he has something in common with House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) that could persuade Boehner to follow Sen. Arlen Specter’s (D-Pa.) lead in leaving the GOP. “He is a person of color,” he said of Boehner, who is white but tans habitually.

Obama said he and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, his Democratic primary foe last year, have become a lot closer since the presidential campaigns.  “The second she got back from Mexico, she pulled me into a hug,” Obama said, alluding to the swine flu pandemic.

On his wife,  "No matter which party you belong to, you have to agree, Michelle has the right to bear arms."  A reference to her penchant for sleeveless dresses.

His kids were not spared, "Sasha and Malia aren't here tonight because they're grounded.   You can't just take Air Force One on a joyride to Manhattan."

Former VP Chaney was a target also.  "Dick Cheney was supposed to be here, but he was working on his memoirs. How To Shoot Friends and Interrogate People."

One Republican missing was Alaska GOP Governor Sarah Palin who could get the GOP Presidential nomination in 2012.   She was scheduled to be a guest of Fox News but had to cancel late because of flooding in her state.  Her husband Todd Palin who is sometimes called the “first dude” came in her place and was left to squirm in the face of a few pointed jokes from the night’s entertainer, comedian Wanda Sykes.

In a not-so-veiled reference to the Palins' teenage daughter Bristol’s out-of-wedlock pregnancy, Sykes said of Sarah Palin’s “early pull out” of the dinner, “Somebody should tell her that’s not really how you practice abstinence.”

Still, the laughter flowed last night in a way that helps everyone release pent up energy.  May we all feel the joy and love of a good laugh with others today and always.
