In the last hours of his life Michael Jackson was doing what he loved most. How many people do you know who have accomplished that? I can count the people that I know on my two hands, and none of them are my relatives.
My family, like most people, tends to die in hospitals after doctors and others have given up on "saving" them. This is the American / Western way. We can't let go into dying, and we can't let go of people who are making that transition.
Michael Jackson was an exception as was Billy Mays and Farrah Fawcett. Mays was pitching products the day before he died. Fawcett was making videos of herself on her deathbed. And Jackson was rehearsing for his "This Is It" live shows on the night before his passing.
For me, it doesn't get any better than that, and doing what you love on your last days does not mean dying young. My teacher and mentor Buckminster Fuller passed on days prior to his 88th birthday and he was still lecturing and writing days before he moved on. Pablo Picasso was 92 and still making art and love to his 46 year-old wife Jacqueline when he died at a dinner party with friends. His final words were,
“Drink to me, drink to my health. You know I can’t drink any more.”
May we all have such amazing lives that continue until the very last moment. And may we learn all that we seek in this lifetime so that we attain true enlightenment.
