Former comedian and comedy writer Al Franken has finally defeated Norm Coleman in the Minnesota Senate race, making him the 60th Democratic senator. So, the Democrats now have a filibuster-proof majority.
If they all agree, they can essentially do anything that they want. How about transforming our country from the more warmongering nation in the history of humankind into a country that promotes peace? How about shifting our resources from weaponry to livingry? How about feeding the hungry, housing the homeless and educating the illerate?
Government is supposed to be doing those types of things, but our government is failing monumentally. At least things may lighten up a bit with Franken in the Senate. After all, he has been one of the best comedians and comic writers of the past decades. Perhaps if those serious folks had a laugh other than at their own stupid behaviors (affairs, bribes, sex scandals, etc.), they would make better decisions.
Best of luck to Al. As someone who was also born and raised in Minnesota, I know that he has more common sense than most. After all, Minnesota is the home state of Bob Dylan, Garrison Keilor, Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale and Jesse "The Body" Ventura.
May government soon truly look to serve the wants and needs of all people, and may we soon realize that we need to change government dramatically in order to create a true democracy.
