Billy Mays died today at his home in Florida at the age of 50 (same as Michael Jackson). Mays was best known for the OxiClean infomercials where he was constantly yelling. With his trademark working shirt, white T-shirt and dark black beard and hair, he had become a pop icon. He shouted at us about all kinds of products on late night TV, but his exuberance is now still. I have no doubt that the "other side" will be happier and cleaner place with Mays there. Although not an icon of Michael Jackson's status, he always appeared genuinely happy, and that quality infected everyone around him.
May was found unresponsive this morning by his wife in their Florida home. Emergency workers on the scene pronounced him dead at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, June 28, and police reported no signs of a break-in or foul play. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
Mays was on the U.S. Airways flight that made a troubled landing in Tampa Saturday when the front tires blew out. He was interviewed after the landing and told TV reporters,
"All of a sudden as we hit. You know it was just the hardest hit. All the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."
Billy's wife said that Billy said he wasn't feeling well before he went to bed Saturday night, and he died in his sleep. This incident reminds me of Natasha Richardson's death. She died after hitting her head when she fell on a ski slope in March of this year. After the fall Richardson also said that she was fine, but within hours she too was dead. As in the case of Richardson, we will have to wait for the autopsy report to know the actual cause of death.
May Richardson, Mays, Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett all find peace and comfort on this last journey of their current incarnation here on Earth. And may we all enjoy and learn from each and every moment during our precious, tenuous time in physical bodies on Earth.
