The heart chakra needs our care and love.
Only in this generation have breast cancer and heart disease become major problems, and this seems to stem from our need to open our hearts to each other at this time of great global and individual stress and crisis. Personally, on August 31, 2009 I survived open heart surgery. Just a week earlier, my cardiologist made it clear that the problem was so bad that my life expectancy was about two months without this major operation. In other words, I would now probably be dead had I not chosen to have quadruple bypass, open heart surgery.
Many people are facing similar decisions. In women, this tends to occur as breast cancer (although the rate of women experiencing heart disease is increasing markedly) while in men the major heart ailment is heart disease (usually heart attacks).
The real issue for me is what can an individual do before a doctor needs to cut them open. In my case, I seemed to be doing all the right things. I meditate daily, don't eat red meat, was exercising several times per week, etc., etc. Still, my arteries got clogged to the point of my contracting serious angina. I could not walk a block uphill without being short of breath and having pain in my chest.
Now, I continue to seek ways to open my heart more fully though practicing compassion and loving kindness with as many beings as possible. This I believe is what we need as individuals and as a society. We can no longer afford to devote our thoughts and resources to war, killing and selfishness. We need to embrace one another in the spirit of love that continues to be preached by so many organized religions yet is seldom practiced by individuals and leaders on a regular basis.
That's what I intend to do about the open heart issue. May we all open our hearts to one another before we reach a place of needing physical intervention to do just that.
