Holiday air fares lower than last year: Consumers need to pay attention (video

Holiday airline fares are lower.
Although airlines are continuing to add luggage fees and surcharges, holiday airline prices are in face dropping. Holiday fliers may pay up to 15 percent less than last year for airline tickets.
Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com, a consumer airline ticket research Web site said,
"The main reason for that are oil prices. There's been a free fall in prices during the recession from November (last year) all the way through June.”
"The bottom line for consumers is that the free fall in ticket prices from November to June, which have slightly bounced off the bottom the past few months, are still historically good deals.”
Still, flexibility and keeping an eye on fare fluctuations will probably yield the best deals.
FareCompare.com advises travelers to shop early and book tickets for holiday travel by the end of October for the best prices. Traveling on the busiest days will always cost more. Last month many large airlines imposed a $10 surcharge on tickets for three of the busiest travel days -- the Sunday after Thanksgiving (November 29), January 2 and January 3.
The surcharge is good for consumers because it shows us all which days to avoid in both costs and hassle. If anything, this price increase should be yet another reason to consider being flexible with holiday plans. You'll find the real savings by traveling a day or two before or after the majority of holiday fliers.
