Celiac disease, the gluten intolerance that affects 1 in 133 Americans, can make the holidays a drag when you're surrounded by endless offerings of spice cakes, cookies, biscotti, and swirling sugar plums taunting you to cave to your cravings.  Fortunately, Chicago has a variety of bakeries that offer gluten-free treats to satiate your palate.

Bleeding Heart Organic Bakery and its sister shop the Bleeding Heart Cafe both offer scrumptious gluten-free choices that taste just as delicious as the real deal.  Michelle Garcia, co-owner and pastry chef of both business, uses organic and locally-produced goods in all of her treats.  Daily offerings include gluten-free chocolate chip cookies and Derby cookies, which are made with rolled oats, dried cranberries, and flax seeds.  Chocolate cakes and cup cakes are available for order. The Bleeding Heart Bakery is located at 1955 W. Belmont Avenue, Chicago.  The Bleeding Heart Cafe, previously known as Chaos Theory Cakes, just reopened today, December 21, at the same Lincoln Square location at 1955 W. Belmont Avenue, Chicago.

The Balanced Kitchen, located in Lincoln Village, offers meals made without gluten, dairy, or animal products. Not only do they offer innovative culinary treats, they also offer a LEED-certified space. The menu offers banana bread french toast, cookies, cake, and mini cakes.  The Balanced Kitchen also offers a six course Sunday brunch, which is by reservation only.  Brunches run $35 per person.

Karyn's Raw Cafe and Karyn's Cooked both offer gluten-free and vegan menu items.  Karyn's Raw Cafe located at 1901 N. Halsted Street, offers gluten-free cheesecakes, cookies, and crackers.  Karyn's Cooked, located in the Loop at 738 North Wells Street, offers a menu with gluten-free desserts like cashew cookies and brownies, in addition to gluten-free menu items.
