Winter doesn't have to mean sacrificing fresh produce and subsisting solely on carrot sticks and lettuce for four stark months.  There is a variety of yummy, seasonal, and local produce available to integrate into your wintertime grocery list.  Try some of the following, which can be found at your local farmers markets.

  • Apples
  • Celery Root
  • Garlic
  • Kale
  • Onions
  • Pears
  • Potatoes
  • Rutabagas
  • Turnips
  • Winter Squashes

There's no shortage of recipes that use the variety listed above--like a kale and potato soup, winter squash souffle, and lentil and vegetable stews. Enjoy the hearty recipes that warm your stomach!

Visit the Green City Market, for year-round produce.  Between November 1 and December 20, visit the Green City Market in the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

The website the Local Beet Chicago has an extensive list of local Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscriptions to help stock your produce bin.
