Liberty Blanchette

Utah’s capitol city is teeming with young artistic talent. Liberty Blanchette is a fine example of the early 20’s crowd bursting onto the scene with beautiful and naturalistic pieces. Primarily a painter, she has been creatively expressing her talents since elementary school. And fortunately for all fine art collectors and aficionados, she shows no signs of slowing down. Liberty recently took some time to answer questions about her talented origins and plans for the future.

When did you begin drawing/painting?  Were you always creative as a child?
One of the earlier memories I have of doing art was when I was about 5 years old: painting a picture of a red house with a midnight sky that was freckled with white gleaming stars.
I didn’t start taking art seriously until I realized that a cheetah I had drawn for a 2nd grade class project looked better than any of the other children’s. The other kids would ask me to draw them horses or frogs in exchange for snacks. I then knew I had something they did not.
I feel that I was always creative; it just took me a couple years to figure out that it might be something special.

What is your favorite medium to work with and why?
Oil paints are by far my favorite medium. I was in junior high when I began to realize I had pent up emotions, and the only medium I could fully connect with to express my moods and emotions were oil paints. They fade, blend, move, and dry the way I choose. This is what ultimately produces my favorite works of art.

Who or what inspires you?  What are you working on now?
Many things act as my inspiration. My husband, fellow artists, good weather, bad weather, emotions, a good opera or symphony, and family all inspire my work.
I am working on a painting of a woman, drowning in and masked by red material. In the upper right corner of the canvas waves a sliver of crimson color that masks her face as it wraps down around her torso and grows into blowing drapery that engulfs her lower body. My inspiration for this piece was Faith. (Pictured below)

Would you like to make a living as an artist, or is it just a side passion?
One of my goals in life is to make a living doing art. Since I see such beauty in the world and I am blessed with the ability to express it through my art, I feel that it should be my job, my daily priority, to share what I see, feel, and create.

If you were a type of movie, what would it be and why?
I would like to think of myself as a Sci-Fi, simply because I love those types of movies and games. When I first started painting with oils my main concentration was on Sci-Fi images and fairy tales. I’m sure if you asked my husband, he would say I’m a Drama. I am a very emotional person and tend to bring excitement and drama to his life. Also, I would be a Drama since I began studying the dramatic lighting and composition of the great painters; and I have redirected my concentration on realism and still life’s.
