Nowadays AIDS has become “a disease of young people.” Although today’s youth may only know it as “manageable,” AIDS is still a complex, life-long disease, complicated by the related complacency and misinformation. Thanks to organizations like Rob De Anthony’s Our Youth today’s youth can better understand the reality of today’s AIDS and stay safe.
Our Youth is a non-profit organization helping young people of all races or sexual orientations who’re dealing with issues of sexuality, homophobia, love, acceptance, and HIV/AIDS. De Anthony’s family and friends have become a larger family—the Our Youth family—dedicating their lives to provide a safer environment for the young generation through motivational speeches, workshops and support groups.
Each May, at St. John’s Church in Union City, NJ, Our Youth celebrates A Night of Acceptance, of remembrance and of brilliant performances… or, how De Anthony calls it, “a great show” and for good reason. The event brought together performers and awardees, friends and family of Our Youth, all warm and wonderful individuals who can share laughs and also responsibilities.
Guests include Laritza Dumont, Miss Clover Honey and Pat Sobota winner of Our Youth Hall of Fame award. Pat Sobota is not only De Anthony’s grandmother, but also the grandmother of Our Youth. She is a consultant for the organization.
In 2007, for example, New York City recording artist Lovari presented Laritza Dumont with the GLBT Hispanic Activist of the Year award. Lovari’s own debut CD, These Tears, was released in 2002, with the song “All I Want Is You” going to Number One on Hot 96 FM and on the GLBT station, WKJCE FM. His new CD is called The Statement," available of Amazon.com. Each year, including this June, Lovari performs at the Pride festivals in New York City area.
Our Youth events continue to gather together artists from around the Tri-State area. They are not only artists, but also AIDS activists, who travel the country talking about the importance of AIDS prevention and education.
