Come watch the Mariners play the Twins on June 6th and support pancreatic cancer awareness. Throughout the baseball season, the Seattle Mariners are joining with various organizations and charities. On June 6th, they will be teaming up with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to help raise money and increase awareness about this disease. The mission statement for this organization is, “The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is a nationwide network of people dedicated to working together to advance research, support patients and create hope for those affected by pancreatic cancer.” They are dedicated to fighting this disease and have active affiliates located in 75 cities across the nation.
In the United States, pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer death. The 2008 statistics released by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network state, “an estimated 37,680 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and 34,290 will die from the disease”. Women are 20% less likely to develop this type of cancer than men are and African-Americans are 40%-50% more likely than other ethnic groups to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The majority of these people will be over the age of 65, but cancer is a concern for individuals of all age groups.
While we cannot totally prevent pancreatic cancer, the Mayo Clinic offers the following advice on how to reduce your risk.
The Mariners are offering discounted tickets on their website to support the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. A portion of the proceeds they raise will be donated to this organization. The deadline to purchase discounted tickets online is Thursday, June 4th.
